Find out about growing and using industrial hemp

SCI has planned a series of events on non-food crops for 2022. Hemp Happening! The first event in the series, will address issues around growing and using industrial hemp.

The morning session will focus on the hemp supply chain including agronomy, genetic improvement and regulation.

Afternoon speakers will address the commercialisation of hemp as a functional fibre in buildings, textiles and plastic composites. Demand for hemp fibre and shiv (the woody core of the hemp stalk) is growing, with increasing interest in the use of sustainable natural fibres to support transition to a low-carbon economy, which will also be discussed at the event.

Hemp Happening! will bring together academics in the field including materials scientists and engineers, business and commercial managers, policy managers, marketing and product development managers, and technical and operations managers.

There will also be guest speakers, Q&A sessions, and the opportunity to network. An exhibition will take place alongside the conference for companies and related organisations who may wish to exhibit.

Early-stage researchers and PhD students working on the production and use of hemp and other sustainable natural fibres that support the transition to the low-carbon economy can also submit entries for a poster competition.

Hemp Happening! takes place on Wednesday 6th April 2022, and aims to broker links between science, agriculture and industry. It will take place at Stem Centre, York, UK from 10am to 4.30pm (BST).

Ticket prices start from £75 and the early bird offer ends Wednesday 23rd February 2022.
