Agri-Tech East training day

Four members of the CHAP team attended the Agri-Tech East Agriculture 101 training day in September.

The day was billed as an overview of agri-industries, with sessions covering the challenges faced and the opportunities available.

Speakers ranged from Emma Kelcher, telling us about her daily life as Technical Manager of Elveden Farms, walking fields, digging samples and testing moisture levels, to grading potatoes for different customer demands, to Emily Norton, who got everybody thinking about what farming really means and the need to balance efficiency with sustainability.

Rozzi Martin from Bayer spoke about the quest to find new pest controls in the face of increasing legislation, while Stuart Hill from Hutchisons looked at the challenge of productivity, efficiency and profitability in arable farming.

Calum Murray, Head of Agriculture and Food at CHAP funder Innovate UK, grabbed the attention of everbody in the room with his talk on the grants available to food producers to finance new innovations in the sector.

The day was very thought provoking, and hopefully, some of the contacts made will bear fruit in the coming months.
