This year has been designated the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH2020) by the FAO, and a number of global events have been planned as part of the initiative.
The 27th and 28th January saw the UK Plant Health Conference held at the National Agri-Food innovation Campus in Sand Hutton, York.
The DEFRA-hosted event was well-attended and had a number of interesting industry speakers talking about a wide variety of issues. Highlights included a session on the International Year of Plant Health itself, presented by Paul Beales, the Head of Plant Health at APHA and CHAP partner Fera’s Julian Smith gave a fascinating insight into Overseas Development Assistance.
Some fantastic networking opportunities presented themselves during the recess and there were notable exceptional poster presentations including one from Fera on The Impact of Fungal Pathogens on International Trade.
There was a great deal of interest in CHAP’s capabilities and services over at the CHAP exhibition stand, which showcased our work with leaflets and banners, and we caught up with Ian Toth, the Director of Scotland’s Plant Health Centre who talked about possible future collaborations with CHAP.
