Technical Liaison and Scientific Research Coordinator

About the Role:

CHAP is seeking to grow its understanding, connections and partnerships across the sector. As part of the Innovation Team this role will be responsible for horizon scanning for the latest game changing developments, increasing market intelligence and sourcing compelling content for the CHAP website and other media channels from a network of contributors.  You will also work closely with the CHAP commercial team and be key to helping CHAP keep its finger on the pulse of the latest cutting-edge advances in agritech and further afield.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Innovation Director and assist in the overall objectives of CHAP
  • Proactively research and engage with the sector to understand current opportunities and challenges
  • Grow the CHAP network, generating new relationships and expanding existing ones
  • Develop and manage a network of contributors who will help to keep CHAP up to date with the latest technical development and provide scientific relevant content for the CHAP website and other media channels
  • Identify relevant funding opportunities
  • Act as a key scientific/technical point of contact for CHAP
  • Raise awareness of CHAP and its capabilities
  • Provide relevant documentation and reports internally
  • Produce briefing documents and presentation as required for colleagues, Board and wider audience.
  • Assist with appropriate reporting to the Innovation, Operational, Commercial teams and Monitoring Officer as required.

Applicants are required to meet the following criteria:

  • A good honours degree in a science discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • A PhD in a science discipline and/or experience of working within a relevant industry sector.
  • Experience and understanding of the academic research and development sector and or commercial technical research sector
  • Experience and knowledge of the UK funding landscape
  • Ability to liaise with a wide variety of colleagues – technical and non-technical
  • Ability to build relationships with a range of organisations
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills with ability to engage with stakeholders at any level
  • Confident, friendly and articulate manner

Event and PR Manager

The Role:

The role would suit an experienced Events/PR Manager with specialisation in plant sciences an advantage. The role requires close engagement with all CHAP staff, Partners and Stakeholders as well as the wider Agritech community. Role will report to the Strategic Marketing Manager

Role Overview – Key responsibilities

PR Responsibilities

  • Liaising with journalists/bloggers both directly and via PR & Communications tools e.g
  • Planning publicity strategies and campaigns in conjunction with the marketing team.
  • Writing and producing press releases.
  • Organising and attending promotional events such as press conferences, open days, exhibitions, tours and visits.
  • Speaking publicly on behalf of CHAP at interviews, press conferences and presentations.
  • Providing CHAP partners, members and prospective members information about new promotional opportunities and current PR campaigns’ progress.
  • Analysing media coverage.
  • Commissioning or undertaking relevant market research.
  • Liaising with Content Manager to assist in content production to help deliver PR/Marketing campaigns (adverts, videos, social media, PR stunts).

Event Responsibilities

  • Organising external event attendance and corresponding with relevant internal/external parties. (e.g. New Scientist Live, Cereals, Future Farming Technologies).
  • Organising/planning/assisting with internal CHAP commercial events. (Workshops/Member/Partner events ).

Membership Manager

The Role:

The role would suit an experienced field based or inside sales based key account manager, with specialisation in plant sciences an advantage. The role requires close engagement with all CHAP staff, Partners and Stakeholders as well as the wider Agritech community.

Role Overview – Key responsibilities

Ownership and responsibility for the establishment, management and continuing development of CHAP’s membership programme, achieving target numbers of new members and revenue targets while retaining the existing membership base.

Further develop the membership growth model and implement to agreed targets, working across the organisation to lead, develop, promote and manage the membership scheme. Work with the Events and PR Manager to deliver any membership programme of associated promotional events.

Responsibility for the CRM tool (including input and that data is accurate and up to date), utilising the data to:

  • Provide regular reports on the membership type
  • Manage the annual Member Satisfaction Survey
  • Manage and develop preference and interest information collected from members
  • Support the on-boarding process
  • Manage the annual membership fee review process to ensure that members’ fees are correct, annual renewal process; professionally handle any required changes to annual fees (increases/decreases).
  • Manage the process for member resignations, including gaining feedback
  • Engage with members, CHAP’S senior team, (and the Board as required), businesses and academics and the wider Agritech stakeholder community
  • Engage with current and prospective members both proactively and responsively.
  • To act as a professional and knowledgeable interface between CHAP and its members.
  • Always keep up to date and ensure compliance with data protection/GDPR requirements.
  • Develop a list of organisations and contacts with similar aims nationwide that Members could work with to increase regional engagement. Execute the plan to arrange these partner relationships.

The Role:

The role would suit an experienced Biology/Plant Science graduate, with specialisation in Horticulture and/or Hydroponics as an advantage.  You would be working directly with the Liberty Produce team, part of an exciting and rapidly growing start-up business, with the opportunity to build upon the current set up and establish specificities within the vertical farm demonstrator.

Specific responsibilities will evolve as the research outcomes are evaluated and you will have the opportunity to shape this as a critical member of the team.

The role would suit an experienced Biology / Plant Science graduate.  You would be working directly with our expert in the CHAP Fine Phenotyping Laboratory, with the opportunity to gain experience using advanced cameras / sensors to quantify plant traits, pests and disease.

Specific responsibilities will evolve as the research outcomes are evaluated and you will have the opportunity to shape this as a critical member of the team.

Business Development Manager

Job Purpose:

Crop Health and Protection Limited (“CHAP”) is one of the four Centres for Agricultural Innovation and a key component of the UK Government’s Agri-Tech Strategy, aiming to spark scientific and technical innovation that enables transformational change and sustainable productivity in agriculture.

Reporting to the Commercial Director, the Business Development Manager (BDM) will work with the Commercial Director and the existing BDM to further develop the pipeline by generating new business and managing existing customers, to improve CHAP’s market position and achieve financial growth. This role requires a proven history in the selling of scientific services, a thorough knowledge of the sector and an understanding of CHAP’s Capabilities.

The BDM will engage with CHAP partners, leading scientists working inside and outside the Capabilities and customer(s) segments, to identify opportunities across SMEs, large agrochemical companies, farmers, growers, agronomists, food retailers, seed companies and soil experts.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Achieve long-term organisational strategic goals and sales income targets by identifying sales opportunities, negotiating, preparing quotations, confirming customer commitment to projects, handling objections, handling complaints and providing excellent customer service
  •  Identify business opportunities; understand and recognise potential for innovation in agriculture and the agri food sectors
  • Build high level strategic key relationships in the sector and grow, maintain and leverage their network
  • Work with the Innovation Team to engage companies/businesses in collaborative research projects and funding opportunities from Innovate UK and other sources
  • Interlink their activities with the Marketing Team to help develop targeted content for marketing campaigns and the website. Identify case studies from the Capabilities to help promote/market CHAP
  • Attend sector functions, such as association events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on the broader sector
  • Submit monthly progress reports to the Commercial Director to ensure CHAP meets its reporting obligations to Innovate UK
